Seating a crowd, movie theater style

Every weekend we have all the kids home for dinner and a movie.  Counting our oldest daughters’ husbands and sometimes John’s mom and my parents, that’s 14-17 people.  Our living area is fair sized, about 18×18, and we have three couches and a couple other chairs around the perimeter.  But it has been challenging to seat everyone so that they are comfy and can easily watch the movie without getting stiff necks.

I thought that if we could find an easy way to raise one couch, we could set another couch in front of it, and put more people directly facing the TV.   We ended up getting 4 large landscape blocks, the kind you use to build retaining walls, to raise the couch about 4 inches.  This gave us just enough lift so on movie night we can set a second couch 4 feet in front of it, movie theater style, with everyone on both couches able to see perfectly.  The blocks are strong and very stable.

When we first tried this I truly had every intention of taking the couch off the blocks between movie nights and stashing the blocks away in a closet.  But I ended up liking the feel of the higher couch.  And it is the the work of 3 minutes to swing that second couch around and turn the room into a theater when it is time for a movie.

Ironically, the ONLY person who has asked about the unconventional couch lift has been our 7 year old neighbor boy.  When we explained what it was for, he said, “Wow, that’s a great idea!”  Odd-looking or not, it works so well for us that I tend to agree with him.

    Great idea!

  4. What a great idea! Love it. Great for the taller people too – I have a couple of very tall men in my family, and most seats are too low for them.

  5. What a great idea! I’d love to hear which movies have been family favorites, especially because you have an audience with a wide age-range. Any holiday favorites?

  6. Awesome idea, We have the same problem!

Blessings on you and your family~
