I’ve done harder things than this

A switch has flipped in my brain.  After vaguely wishing for years to be fit, but hating the sweat and time and effort, I’m finally doing it, pain and sweat and all.   I’m taking it slow.  Fifth week of running and I’m only doing week 3 of the C25K routine.  But I’m challenging myself nonetheless, each week doing more, faster, better.

Five weeks ago I was run/walking a mile in 16.5 minutes.  This week my average speed is about 13.5 minutes per mile. I can run a quarter mile without stopping, walk a bit, and then run another quarter mile.

Each time my body proves itself able, I’m surprised.  And yet in a way I’m also not.  I’m a mom after all.  I’ve done much harder things.  This?  This is just putting one foot in front of the other.  But it feels good.

    I love that your writing about this. My husband and I have recently started back lifting weights and in the process getting fit. It’s nice to know ilm not the only woman who has to really push herself. And it’s funny you mentioned about doing harder things as a mom because every time I try to complete a hard lift I think to myself ” I have three kids 2 yo and under and going through labor was harder than this.” keep up the good work! I know I’m down 25lbs and for the first time in my life I bought to buy smaller clothes! And that felt great!

  3. Congrats on the running! I remember how great that feeling is when you are done and feel so accomplished. You are making me want to start running again even though I hate it. 🙂

  6. Yeah Mary! I’m going to keep repeating that mantra.

    I’ve recently started trying to get healthy also. I find that it has great stress-reducing qualities. I’ve been doing cardio and weight-lighting. I was NOT going to run. Then someone invited me to a 5k that was raising awareness for adoption. Well…okay. I’m on my fourth week of C25k and it hasn’t gotten any easier. The sense of accomplishment IS worth it.
