…is the number of miles I walked/ran this past week.  A mile and a half more than last week, and about a minute faster per mile on average.  I’m up to the rip-roaring speed of 15:30/mile.  And yes, that is running about 1/3 of the time.  Speedy I am not.

Seems like the lungs are getting better– I’m not huffing and puffing quite as quickly.  But the muscle aches are showing up this week. My right knee takes a bit to warm up– tweaks me for about the first 5 minutes of running. Same with my left hamstring.  Not terrible, but enough that I don’t really want to push too hard or fast.   They were worst the day that I ran two days in a row– it is definitely better to take a day off between. Makes sense:  I’ve literally been a couch potato for a decade or more.  It’s OK if this getting in shape thing takes some time.

I got new shoes this week– a pair of grey and lime-green Asics which I am liking so far.  At $50 (reduced from $80 at Big 5) they are the most expensive shoes I’ve ever bought.   But they are stable with good cushioning, good for running in gravel on country roads.  I figured that since I am serious about getting  in shape, I’d also better be serious about protecting my knees and ankles.  Thus the shoes. So far so good.

I can feel myself getting more energetic, both in general throughout the day, and in small things, like running up the stairs instead of plodding.  Crazy, but I think my body wants this as much as my head does.

It’s a good thing.

  1. Hooray! That is reason to celebrate!
I totally get what you’re saying about the going up the stairs thing! I was pretty surprised to experience this the first time. It was like I had spring in my step instead of lead!
    Keep it up! 😀

  2. I just started running on the treadmill at the gym a couple weeks ago… Looking back to my youthful days of running track, my 17-year old me could have run circles around me now. Quite literally. I’m gonna have to check out that couch to 5K thing. Hubbs and I signed up to run a 5K in the winter, but I’m doubting that I’ll be ready. Good for you!

  3. we seem to be in sync. not running for me but the gym and I am astounded its working, down a dress size thus far!.
congratulations keep going its the little triumphs that make the bigest impact

  4. That is so wonderful! Good for you!

I’ve wanted to take on running, but that will have to wait until *after* the big day (due date.)

  5. I’m proud of you! Keep it up!

  6. awesome.
I’m sad to say I’m moving the opposite direction. I notice I’ve been avoiding trips up the stairs. (5th month of 6th pregnancy)

  7. I’d say you have good reason for that, Angela!

  8. I’m so glad that you are still going strong(er) and living to post about it. I injured my knee during my third work out almost 2 weeks ago. I still think about running, well, you know, jogging. 🙂 I check my knee each day to see if perhaps soon I may start again. I’m babying it but I might be back to at least walking soon. It is incredibly weird that I am actually thinking about working out and looking forward to getting back into it.
