Compassion International in the Dominican Republic

Last spring I read about Sophie’s and Shannon’s trip to Uganda last spring, where they blogged on behalf of Compassion International. It sounded like such a neat chance to help a favorite charity that I wished I had been chosen to go as well.

Compassion is planning another trip, this time to the Dominican Republic November 2nd through 7th, and this time– woot!!– I am one of the bloggers they are sending! I’m so thrilled to get the chance to learn more about Compassion’s work, and to tell you about it as well.

Other blogging travelers include:
Tim with
Marlboro Man, husband of Pioneer Woman
Jennifer of
Melanie aka Big Mama
possibly Pete with Without Wax.
Brian of A Simple Journey
and Shaun Groves, the tremendous zucchini-farmer who blogs at the SHLOG

I’ll be writing more about the trip later, I’m sure, but if you’re interested, here’s a video Shaun did on his last trip there, and if you’re interested in sponsoring a child yourself, click on the graphic in my left sidebar.

  1. I am so jealous (in a good way of course!). I also applied and will be reading your posts with great excitement for you!

  2. Oh my gosh Mary! I am jealous too! But no other blogger mom friend is better suited for it than you! Wow, way cool! Can’t wait to hear all about and vicariously live through the trip with you! Saving all those pennnies this month will help in November.
P.S. we’re doing 30 days of nothing with you AND visiting Ethiopia end of the month…poor planning on my part…keep thinking of stuff I want to take but WILL NOT go out to buy. ๐Ÿ™‚
    bride to Mike
    mommy to many
waiting for two more wee ones in Ethiopia

  3. I’m so excited for you!!!! I can’t wait to follow all y’all on this trip.

  4. I’m so happy for you, Mary!

  5. I’m sure that you will paint amazing word pictures of your trip.

  6. That is so awesome! i can’t wait to hear how it goes.

And marlboro man’s name is LYLE? I did not picture that. ๐Ÿ™‚ Cannot compute….

  7. Wow! That is so exciting. I am very happy for you. Question~ I am doing the 30 day challenge. I noticed that everone else linked to you with their entire blog instead of just the first entry. Dah! That makes sense. However, I linked to you with only my first entry. Should I link again with my whole blog and you remove the first one or should I just link again when I have something new to share? Let me know what you want me to do.

  8. That’s great, Mary! I was so moved by the last trip, I can’t wait to follow you on this one!

BTW~I thought Marlboro Man’s real name was Ladd? Lyle or Ladd, I’m still always going to think of it as Marlboro Man visits the Dominican Republic. LOL!

  9. YIPEEE!!!!!!!!! I’m so happy and I can’t wait to read all about it!

  10. Oh, SO cool! Yay you!

  11. How fun! I wanted to go, too. But the money for the trip just isn’t in the cards this year. Have fun, learn a lot, and come back with stories…

  12. I am thrilled you are going. I’ll be praying for all of you in the days and weeks to come!

  13. Woot! I am super excited to read all about it. I’m glad you get to go. I’ve been reading PW for over a year and had forgotten MM had a real name! I don’t know all of the bloggers going, but congratulations to all of you! (OK, especially you, MM, and Melanie. I can’t wait to read all about it!)

  14. FABULOUS!!! What a great experience for you-and for us through you. I can’t wait to read all about it.

  15. That’s wonderful! I applied for this trip too. I guess I didn’t get picked! LOL!

  16. Teehee.

Just chiming in to say Marlboro Man’s name is not Lyle. The folks at Compassion somehow got it wrong. Must be the Oklahoma accent on our part. ๐Ÿ˜‰

He and our girls are going on the trip, though. What an experience for them…

(I’m staying home in my cocoon, of course…)

  17. Oh, huge congratulations to you!!! What a wonderful experience and I look forward to reading every word right here :)) I debated about applying but ended up chickening out. Perhaps another time. I’m so glad you are one of the participants. And to hang out with MM and his girls – that’s going to be fun too! You will be in my prayers.

  18. Oh wow! What an amazing honor! I’m so excited for you!!

  19. What amazing news! I can’t wait to hear all about it ! I loved reading the posts from Uganda, just like the rest of the world. Is MM going to start his own blog, I wonder? What a thought!

  20. Oh Mary, I’m so thrilled for you! If I didn’t have a nursling, I SO would have been applying for the trip too! *sigh* Maybe next time…

  21. They couldn’t have selected a more perfect blogger/woman/heart for this trip.
I keenly await how God is going to meet you as you live-blog it, Mary…
He’s close and has a plan for incomprehensible good…
    Go with God, friend!

    All’s grace,

  22. Mary — I’m looking forward to meeting you and having this experience together!

(This is my personal blog link, but I’m representing 5 Minutes for Mom on the trip).

  23. Congrats on the trip, Mary! I loved reading all the blogs last year, and I am sure that I will enjoy reading your perspective.

  24. It’s great to finally know who I’m praying for, lol. You’ll be a wonderful voice among a fantastic team. Having met Melanie, I’m thrilled for her, thrilled for you, happy for the whole ding-dang team. I’d love to be a part, and in some small way, hopefully undergirding y’all in prayer (and the people you’ll meet) will help advance this marvelous Kingdom work.

  25. Compassion picked a wonderful, interesting, diverse group of people. Congratulations Mary! The fact that you made the list speaks volumes about your character and your heart. (Not to mention your writing gift.)

    I look forward to November.

  26. Holla! That’s so awesome. Crazy, totally, unbelievably awesome. Love Compassion.

  27. If anyone reading is a blogger and would like to post on behalf of Compassion International, they can go to and sign up for monthly blog โ€œassignmentsโ€ under โ€œBlog For Compassion.โ€ I’d love to hear from any bloggers who would like to travel with us in the future too. 28. Somehow the whole first half of my comment vanished – making me look like some kind of spammer. I mean, I am but I’m also here to say how happy I am to have you along on this trip in November. I had the best time talking to you on the phone – you made me want to adopt six kids…and that’s pretty miraculous.

Looking forward to hangin with you in person soon, and eating some yummy dog meat. Kidding. (Probably)
