Hair angst

The hair– eek, the hair. I got it cut the other day and I am still making peace with it. I keep reliving that fateful moment in the beauty shop when the stylist stood with her scissors poised, saying, “Here?”

And I said — sigh — I said, “No, a little shorter than that.”

Eeek. I forgot the way hair shrinks when it dries.

And layers. I asked for layers, I know I did. I was picturing something a little choppier looking. But I seem to have a smooth little cap of hair.

Eek.

Do I go try again– and pay again? My hubby says it looks like me. My sisters like it. My kids like it. But I can’t decide.

  1. Very cute and sassy! Keep it for a few weeks and then decide if you like it for keeps. Adding layers is easy.

FINALLY a topic I am an expert in. All matters hairstyle. At last. Okay, Mary. Chill. It looks really nice, sophisticated. Do not, I repeat, do not go back and ask for more layers. I shudder to think of the outcome. You need to get accustomed to this new look a bit. And I know how busy you are there in the owlhaven, but, styling your hair with a round brush and the blowdryer will keep it looking stylin’ the way it does now. Just live with it for a bit. Post a pic of it as it looks in a couple of weeks, when YOU style then. Then ask me again :))

love ya girl. you still look like your daughters!

  3. I think waiting a bit to get used to it and see what you really think – before making a decision to change it – is the best way to go.

    It looks nice!

  4. I think it looks Great!! Wish I could get mine to look as good. 🙂 🙂

  5. i think it looks great. summery 🙂

  6. I think that your hair looks lovely. I agree Jeannie, this is a much easier look to do than one with more layers. Live with it for a few weeks and see how you like it then. New dos always take a little time to get used to.

  7. I think it looks great! I bet you could make it look choppy with some hair product. Something texturizing, like bedhead manipulator.

  8. Well, I’m the last person on the face of the planet that should be giving hair advice…but I like it and wouldn’t do anything for a week or so.

It’s very chic and suits your pretty face. 🙂

  9. I really think it looks good on you. GIve it some time and you might decide you like it after all…But just give it time don’t do anything rash even though you probably want to. Resist the urge, you might end up with something you can’t stand in the slightest if you act to fast!

  10. I think it’s very cute!! Chopping a lot off is a big gulp. I had mine nearly buzz cut for a while and it was a big change, but I loved it! Now I have the growing-out-hair angst! 🙂

  11. I just cut my hair too, very similar to you. I too am not to sure about it yet. Some days yes but when I look worn out it looks pretty ugly.

I really like yours. Looks very nice.

  12. oooh cute! it is very nice. I have totally frizzo hair and could never pull off such a style-so envious!!! I do love having curly hair, but every now and then I think, “what if I could actually get a STYLE instead of a nest???” Sigh-God knows what works best on us all, though, doesn’t He?? You look great!

  13. Your hair style looks great!

  14. I love it, Mary! Wait and see in a week or so, but I think it looks great.

  15. I really like it. It’s a keeper!

  16. Love it!

  17. Mary, I LOVE your hair! I actually de-lurked just to tell you that! I think it looks feminine and lovely… don’t fret about it!! If your gut tells you to get it ‘choppier’, then do it. However, don’t get it cut more just because you don’t like this cut, because you look awesome!

  18. it’s perfect.

  19. I really like it! You could use a straightener on it, if you want it less round at the bottom.

  20. It looks great! I like the length.

  21. I think it looks very elegant! When I had my hair cut recently, I said it looked a bit uneven. Now I look like I lost a fight with my lawn mower. 🙁 Want to trade? LOL

  22. I love it! It looks stylish, neat, and trendy. Take some time to live with it and I’m sure you will begin to become comfortable with it.

  23. I like it too, sophisticated! I always give myself a week, after a haircut, to decide if I like it or not. I had a haircut like your new one and decided to go choppier. I’ve waited 2 weeks and still don’t like it. Now waiting for it to grow out, so I have your cut again.

  24. Too cute!!! Don’t change a thing.

  25. I like it – though I agree with Jeana – you could use a flat iron to make the bottom not so rounded and create a bit of a sassier look. A bit of wax (post flat iron) would help out the ends if you do use a flat iron.

I don’t think you are quite at the rounded bottom hair style yet… you are much too sassy and funky to be at that point.

    I hope that wasn’t offensive! 🙂

  26. That is my all time favorite haircut, and the one I keep trying to get my kids to allow me to get (they love mine long and would be devastated if I cut it again–sigh.)The great thing about that cut is that it looks great without too much fuss.

  27. Oh I think it looks GREAT! But I know how frustrating it is to not be satisfied. I love it though!!!

  28. bloginmyeye says:

Love it. (I wouldn’t just say that)

  29. How funny, Mary! I got the exact same haircut just a while ago and I’m STILL struggling with it! I said layers also, but where are they??? It’s just…too smooth. Your post here pretty much has me determined to go get a do-over and probably wind up CHOPPING IT ALL OFF in the meantime.

FWIW, you DO look beautiful, no matter what!

  30. I’m so with you when you say you ‘ve been “making peace” with a hair cut. That’s why I’ve gone so long since my last cut. I just don’t want to go through the struggle.

I love your style, Mary. It’s hip, cute, and certainly a little bit funky. If you want something a little less smooth and polished, try a little mousse and scrunching it while you dry it . . . voila . . wavy and a little more fuss-free look.

I think you look fabulous, certainly not old enough for being a mom of two post-high graduates now.

Hang in there, and thanks for sharing your new look with us! I love the photo.

  31. Like all the other commenters, I can sympathize. If you decide within the next couple days that you want to change it, your stylist SHOULD fix it for free. I like it, though! : )

  32. I think you look beautiful, Mary. It’s stylish, fun and short for the summer. If your hair is like mine, it will grow fast enough for the cooler winter months anyway.

  33. Oh, I think you look CUTE! But, be sure to get what you want!

    Steph

  34. I like it! It makes you look blonder, somehow. Did you get highlights too?

  35. Its a nice cut!! My hair cut is similar, only I have more layers or “thinning” in the back because I have a lot of hair there. The only advice I have is to get sideswept bangs! It’ll balance the haircut and you won’t have to deal with blow drying with round brushes and such.

  36. Sounds like MY day last Saturday. I went in to get something different/sassy/updated. I couldn’t decide between a short bob or long layers with bangs, but I knew FOR SURE that I wanted to avoid that awkward, in-between shoulder length. My friend told me that I’m a “sexier” person, and should go with the long, flowy layers – just a few inches shorter than the really long hair that I had. That sounded good. With the bangs.

What did I come home with? The in-between hair. And to top it off, we’re going on vacation next week…to see lots of old friends and extended family. So far I’m either strategically avoiding the mirror, or keeping my hair in a pony tail. Bummer! And I can’t blog about it, because I happen to work/go to church with the woman who cut it, and lots of people who read my blog know her.

Okay, enough about me. Your hair ROCKS!

Mary – When the hair photo post first flashed up on my screen, my immediate thought was – Oh, Mary’s older daughter got a chic new french haircut! I’m not even kidding! You look beautiful and elegant and young! What could be better than that?

  38. Flattering!
    Sassy!
And what Mom doesn’t need to sass it up and remind herself that’s she’s still and Fine woman!

  39. OH I think it looks cute! I just cut mine too and I am happy with it. I have naturally curly red hair and I have always wanted it to grow long and wild but alas it just doesn’t stay nice looking (read…gets ratty!). Shorter it better and it brings out all my curls!

You are beautiful…always remember that…inside and out!

I think you will grow to love it. Besides if you don’t it will always grow back!

    hugs and brightest blessings

  40. keep it! you look great! xo

  41. Mary,

Your hair looks awesome!! Don’t change it a bit. I know, I’m an 80’s girl too – I always think things should look a little more scrunchy….BUT your hair looks very chic and modern and just plain CLASSY!!
People must look at you and say ‘Her? 10 kids? I don’t believe it!!’.

If you find that wrangling a round brush and a hair dryer at the same time is a bit much then try to find a round brush-hairdryer combo. Looks like a round brush that plugs in. Runs about $20.

Take care and have a great day.

  42. I totally agree with Jeannie!!! DO NOT ask for more layers!

You may think it will be all cute and sassy, but you will need a whole TON of gunk smeared in your hair to make it that way.

I love short sassy hair cuts (think Meg Ryan) but I know that if I cut my hair that short, it will all fall together and I will look like a boy.

I absolutely love your hair the way it is!

    🙂

  43. You look lovely, Mary. It totally suits you! And it looks nice and cool for summer.

  44. I like it.

Your hair is a great color too.

  45. Awwww, so cute! I wouldn’t change it at all…

  46. It looks awesome!

  47. Love it!
