Sunday – Legacy

This morning two little children stood at the front of our church and sang “Jesus Loves Me”. One of the children was my 3 year old daughter, and the other was the 5 year old son of my cousin. My cousin sat at the piano accompanying them, and I sat on the floor in front of our little ones, mouthing every word to them.

They didn’t need me. They knew every word. But I sat there anyway, glad for the closeness of my front row floor seat, and for the sound of their sweet little voices. They’d been shy half an hour before, in practice. But now they stood in front of the mikes, all confidence.

At the final chorus of “Yes, Jesus Loves Me”, they paused in perfect unison for a second after the “yes” — as if putting their own exclamation point on the affirmation — and then completed the song with smiling little faces.

Afterwards I found myself thinking of my grandmother, a champion of faith who is in heaven now. Years ago she wrote me a letter, mentioning in it how much she’d enjoyed hearing her grandchildren singing in church. At the time I’d smiled indulgently at her huge joy in such a simple thing. But today I understood that joy.

3 John 1:4

I have no greater joy than to hear that my children are walking in the truth.

  7. Thanks for this post Mary! I feel the same JOY listening to my 5 year old son Luke singing this song! It is indeed a mother’s JOY to know her children are walking in the truth. Thanks for the scripture reference too…something I’ll commit to memory 🙂
