Doing battle with rising gas prices

Ready for cold weather

With our passel of kids, John and I have spent many years driving big vehicles. We bought our current full-size Ford van when we had five kids, with zero clue we’d eventually fill a 12-passenger van. (At the time, the thought probably would have terrified us, actually. Isn’t it funny how God so gently leads us in directions we’d never imagine?)

At the time we went for the big van for its towing capability. We also have an old 26-foot travel trailer–a hugely heavy beast– and John wanted the V10 engine in the Ford econoline. Though that V10 engine excels at towing and at people-hauling, as you can imagine it doesn’t get the best gas mileage. The van averages 14 mpg running around town, and about 9 mpg when we’re towing that trailer. Pitiful, right? With the increase in gas prices in the past few years, we’ve really been feeling pain at the gas pump. As much as possible we drive our minivan (20 mpg) or John’s tiny Festiva (42 mpg- yehaw!)

I’m looking forward to someday getting rid of the big van. But with 6 kids still at home, and the occasional college student or friend joining us on trips, that time isn’t quite yet. So when I heard about the Fuel Rewards Network™ program, I was interested. It’s possible to earn rewards by shopping online at designated retailers, at some restaurants, or even at some grocery stores to earn more credit.

One of the things we’re hoping to do sometime soon is update our boys’ bathroom. (Hoping to blog about that this summer.) I’ve been looking for good prices on a new shower stall, so when it comes time to buy, I’ll be sure to access to home improvement sites via the Fuel Rewards Network Online Mall. To earn rewards for local dining or grocer purchases, you need to make sure your debit or credit card is linked to your Fuel Rewards Network Account, something I haven’t done yet. But I figure just with the occasional online purchase, I should be able to earn some rewards.

You can also sign up for your very own Fuel Rewards Network program Card here!

How would you benefit from the Fuel Rewards Network program? Answer that question below and enter to win a $100 Shell Gift Card.

I like the idea of earning fuel reward points for doing shopping at JC Penney or Macys online. My summer wardrobe needs some updating. 🙂

  2. Fuel rewards would be a huge help for us — church 3 x a week half an hour from home gets pricey!

When you get ready to do a shower install, talk to your local carpenters/handymen. That’s a very common thing to have used in good condition because so many people mod their bathrooms. My husband usually sells them for $25 – $50.

  3. Amanda says:

Fuel rewards would be great- we live 50 miles from town… and EVERYTHING is in town. We don’t even *have* a gas station in our area!

  4. I totally need something like this as my son will be starting a new school in July that is 30 miles away from our home. So, sixty miles twice a day. It’s gonna be rough, but he has autism and needs this incredible program. So we do it.

Thanks so much for the giveaway.

  5. ginny jolin says:

My son has just lost his job and I would love to give it to him and his family.

  6. I do a lot of shopping online, so anything that provides a discount just for shopping would benefit us! We’re currently burning through two tanks/week (one per vehicle) at the least, so this card would seriously help…for one week. *grin*

  7. My husband commutes about 75 miles daily to work, so any money we can save on gas would be great! I love that you can earn “points” while shopping online

  8. Amy Mac says:

We also have a giant gas guzzling van to tote our 6 boys. I love getting things on-line so I don’t have to go out and use gas. So I would love the rewards. Everything here in Idaho is just so spread out.

  9. We just had to upgrade our vehicle to accommodate our growing family plus foster kiddos. While I LOVE the space, the fill-ups cause a small heart attack! 🙂

  10. rhonda Coplin says:

It would mean 100.00 more paid off my credit card debt.

  11. We’ve done a ton of driving to work with our team of counselors over the past few years. Unfortunately, all the good ones are about 1.5 hour drive away (one way!) So thankful for God’s provision! Thanks, Mary!

  12. My husband drives for one hour to get to work every day, and we could really use the fuel rewards program to save money on gas

  13. rebecca shockley says:

I drive roughly 25,000 to 30,000 miles a year or more, so this would benefit me well!

  15. My husband is just about to start a new job 65 miles away – a bit of a shock after working from home for the last 9 years!
I’m thinking you could combine this program with ebates to get even more cashback on your on-line purchases

    • Of course, now I read about the FRN program, you can’t use ebates too. Now it’s a toss-up to decide which program is best

  16. tia bennett says:

Sounds interesting, I am going to look into it.

  17. Mami2jcn says:

I would benefit from the savings on gas because our relatives are all in other states and driving to see them can be very expensive.

  19. We’ll probably be traveling this summer, so it’d be great to save on gas!

  20. Fuel rewards sounds intriguing! I have an unemployed son who would love the gas money for job-hunts!

  21. Christina says:

Both cars in my family are fairly average as far as mpg. It would be excellent to save some money on gas since we were considering a road trip to visit family this summer!

  22. Any savings on gas would be most welcome!

  23. Hey! Thanks so much for this info! I’m not sure whether I fully get how it works. Do you link your credit cards to the Fuel Rewards program and then have a separate fuel rewards card you put in at the pump to make the gas cheaper, then pay for the gas with your normal credit card?

We already use a gas rewards credit card to get 3% off gas, so I’m wondering whether we can use that and this together.

    • You swipe the Fuel Rewards card at a Shell station, and then pay however you usually do. I’m guessing you could probably also use the gas rewards credit card, as long as you are buying gas AT a Shell station.Online you get the credit by going to the Fuel Rewards website and then clicking *from there* to the associated online stores. In my understanding you only have to link the cards when you’re shopping locally, like for groceries, but NOT at the Shell station.

  24. Jessica To says:

I would benefit by saving money on my commute to work!

  25. This would be great for us because I drive a Suburban everywhere, or our truck that gets 7mpg! We also use our credit card for every purchase, so I can see the credits adding up quickly! This would really help us for our vacation this fall. Thanks for the opportunity!

  26. Julie Z says:

Our church is moving from 1/4 of a mile away to 20 miles away! We will definitely be putting more miles on our 12 passenger van!

  27. Kelly D says:

I would benefit from the Fuel Rewards Network program because my husband has a long commute to work and we have a lot of upcoming trips this summer. It would help us save money so we could enjoy more activities with our kids.

  28. Kelly D says:
  29. My husband drives over 60 miles a day for work, so we are always in search of ways to save on gas expenses.

  30. We’ve been taking a ton of trips between NC and MD. At over 260 miles each way! The FRN could definitely take some of the pain at the pump away.

  33. Nicole Larsen says:

We could benefit from this because we camp a lot during the summer and drive long distances–gas prices are ridiculous right now!

  34. Nicole Larsen says:
  35. I would benefit by saving money on gas. Always a win.

  36. Kristin P. says:

Chances seem likely that we’ll be moving late this summer and fuel rewards would help us make the drive and afford the moving vans much more easily!

  37. I do alot of shopping online so to earn points for that would be great!

We do alot of road trips so saving on gas would be great!

  38. We’ll be having a second baby soon, so any way to save would be very welcome! Besides, I’m sure two kids will require lots of trips into town. 🙂

This really sounds like a great program. My husband and I are on the road often and use lots of fuel. This extra savings would really add up for us.

  43. We’d love to get benefits from buying what we already do! Not even sure what we’d get, but the idea is great!

  44. Stephanie V. says:

Just applied for this and got my card a few days ago. Gas is expensive in CA and we drive a lot so major benefits!
