Giveaway: For Girls Like You

For Girls Like You  is a magazine written for girls age 6-11, and shares stories about interesting places, positive role models, and creative projects, without the negative imagery and advertising that often appears in mainstream entertainment.  The creators want this new magazine to entertain and inform young girls in a God-honoring way. Each issue features many opportunities (called Sprinkles) where they ask girls to contribute their own thoughts and ideas.

For Girls Like YouI was sent two issues of this new magazine, as well as a copy of their ‘maga-book’  which features lots more stories, crafts, writing prompts, and activities.  My 8 and 10 year old daughters have been poring over the magazines ever since they arrived a few days ago, and have really enjoyed the various features and stories about people.  My teen daughters have also spent some time checking the magazine out.

I love that the magazine features girls of every color in a very balanced way.  Too often magazines feature endless blonde white girls, with a light brown girl tossed in there every now and then as a nod towards folks who aren’t pale-skinned.  My girls especially enjoyed the feature about Jamie-Grace, who is one of their favorite singers.

This week I’m giving away a one-year subscription to For Girls Like You to one of my readers.  Enter the drawing by commenting below and telling me a little about the girl you’d like to give this magazine to– what does she like to read about?  What kinds of activities does she like to do?   (I’m sure the editors of For Girls Like You would love ideas for future issues!)  If you’d like an additional entry to this giveaway, go ‘like’ For Girls Like You on Facebook then come back here and comment AGAIN, telling me you liked them. Bonus points if you write on their wall and tell them where you heard about their magazine!

I’ll choose a winner on Friday!

  8. I would love to give this magazine to my sweet 8 year old granddaughter who is a voracious reader. She is an excellent student at her private, very academic (and expensive, I’m sure) school, and the input from this non-worldly magazine would help provide some balance in her life. She and her 6 year old brother are taking private Spanish lessons; they are the recipients of many benefits that loving parents and the world can offer. This sounds like the kind of magazine that might appeal to her and help feed her spirit. It would be especially fun to tell her that I won it in a contest, just for her!

  9. My almost 7-year-old loves Encycopedia Brown and American Girl books, anything having to do with fairies and crafts, ballet, and art projects!

I- Interested in anything “old fashioned” or Laura Ingalls Wilder
E- Excited about anything adventurous, she recently held a funeral for a rooster she found, and also LOVEs the Subway in New York CIty

CELIE would SO ENJOY this magazine.

I have six girls that would ALL love to read this magazine! 🙂 They each have such distinct personalities and interests, but they LOVE reading about other girls who have the same standards as they try to attain! We were SO BUMMED when they discontinued Brio magazine, so this sounds AWESOME! 🙂 Thank you!!

  23. My daughter is 6, and I would love for her to read and see positive role models such as you are describing. She loves animals, especially horses. I can already see her putting an emphasis on her image, and I pray that she will realize whats in the inside is more important. We must be proactive to counter the message constantly sent in our culture.

  25. This looks like a great magazine for young girls! I have two, Min just turned 11 (adopted from China 9 yrs ago0 and Joy, 11 (adopted from Taiwan last year). Min is my avid reader, Joy (although 11, emotionally closer to 8), does not like to read. sooo, we are trying to find ways to encourage her. This may be the ticket!

I have several girls but the one upmost in my mind in regards to this magazine is my 12 year old. She is a frilly tomboy. Loves to dress up but loves to get dirty in the garden or playing. She loves to cook, play volleyball and started track this year for the first time and is really enjoying it. She makes friends easily, adults love to have her help them at church and she is fearless when it comes to telling people about Jesus.

  39. My four little ladies in that age group like singing, crafts, board games, bike riding. Two are African-born and two are Canadian-born. Thanks for the info about this publication!

  41. My sweet daughter just turned eight. She is our only girl w/five brothers: one above her and four under. (She’s wanted a sister for a very long time.) She has worked very hard to learn to read and wants to very badly but is at a basic level. I think she would love looking at and flipping through and practicing her reading with this magazine. She LOVES crafts and has told me she wants to learn to crochet. She can make anything w/markers, tape and blank paper. She is very thoughtful and makes a card for any and all occasions. She picks things from her room and wraps them for others for their special occasions. I’m not on Facebook so can’t like them there.
