Win a Mary Kay goodie basket

A few weeks ago I had the fun of getting a whole box of Mary Kay makeup in the mail. I am not a woman who uses tons of makeup, but I wear some nearly every day, and I’m always game to try something that might work better than what I’m using. So I was more than pleased to see this box arrive. Also circling the box were my 14-year-old and 17-year-old daughters, legitimate possible owners of some of these goodies, AND my 10- and 7-year-old daughters, who aren’t remotely old enough for the stuff. Here’s what we got:

  • Mary Kay® Compact Mini, a refillable magnetic compact that fits three eye colors and one cheek color. There’s even a hidden tray underneath for applicators.
  • Mary Kay® Mineral Eye Color in Golden Vanilla, Truffle, Lavender Fog, Midnight Star, Sweet Plum and Black Pearl
  • Mary Kay® Mineral Cheek Color in Shy Blush
  • Mary Kay® Ultimate Mascara, Lash Love™ Mascara, and Lash Love™ Waterproof Mascara
  • Mary Kay® NouriShine Plus™ Lip Gloss in Mango Tango, Rock ’n’ Red and Café Au Lait
  • Mary Kay® Lash Primer
  • TimeWise® Microdermabrasion Set, a refiner/exfoliator and a replenisher that together fight fine lines, refine pores and create smooth skin

Saving the TimeWise set for myself, I started by giving the big girls a shot at the makeup. They had a grand time trying out all sorts of colors and did a nice job making each other over. Not surprisingly, their deep skin tones looked wonderful with some of the brighter colors that’d never work for me. Most of the eye shadow colors sent were either a bit too bright or too sparkly for me — I prefer neutral matte shades with no sparkles. But every color sent looked great on the girls.

I really liked the TimeWise Microdermabrasion Set. It has the tiniest scrubbing beads ever, and it left my skin feeling extremely smooth and glowy. I also was pleased with the Lash Primer. It is supposed to provide definition and curl, and to make your mascara go on more smoothly, and I felt like it did all those things. Well, maybe not the curl…As far as I’ve ever been able to tell, my eyelashes don’t curl. (And boy, I’ve tried. In high school I used a little metal torture device that gave me square corners in my eyelashes–not a good look.) Both of the mascaras were also good, though I liked the feel of the non-waterproof one a bit better than the waterproof, which felt stiff on my eyes.

One of the things I’ve been having the most trouble with lately is finding a foundation that has enough coverage to even out my complexion without looking ghostly and unnatural. I currently have at least five different bottles of foundation in my bathroom cupboard, none of which I love. When the box of Mary Kay goodies didn’t include any foundation, I did what I should have done a long time ago: I sent an email to my cousin Meika, a local Mary Kay consultant. Within two days she’d mailed enough foundation samples that I was finally able to choose a color and a coverage that works well with my complexion. Three days later, she sent me a whole bottle. As I’d expected, it was a bit pricey. But I’d paid nearly twice that for the five bottles that didn’t work. So yay for Mary Kay . Here’s a picture of all four of my girls after their makeovers. I think they’re fans too, especially the ones who got to play with makeup for the first time ever.

I was provided with Mary Kay products to use and review, and was compensated for this post. However, all opinions are my own.

  1. I’ve used Mary Kay foundation for quite a while and would love an opportunity to try some more products!

  2. Andrea Masiewicz says:

I would love to get a Mary Kay goodie basket!

  3. Sissy Scoppa says:

To always use a primer before applying makeup – amazing the difference in the way my skin feels and how smoothly it goes on!!!

  4. “Pretty girls act pretty ~ Miss Cora

  5. I used to use Mary Kay when I was in high school but haven’t used it in years. I always had such fun playing with the samples and finding colors that looked good on me. I should find someone who sells it and get some going again. Hmmm. My tip? Moisturize! Not just creams or oil mixtures on the outside, but plenty of water on the inside, too. Along with plenty of sleep. Now, if only I followed my own advice… (she says as she suddenly realizes it is 1:30 AM)

  6. always wash your make up off at night – sometimes you are just too tired to follow that rule!

  7. Elizabeth says:

I’ve learned that while it’s fun to follow the latest fads, to look your best you sometimes have to be brave and avoid the fads that don’t work for you! Whether it’s a popular color that just doesn’t go with your skin tone, or a style of clothing that makes you uncomfortable, if it doesn’t work for you it’s not going to make you look attractive. Skip it and go with whatever makes you really shine. 🙂

  8. I’ve been using Mary Kay for about 40 years and really like their products. My mother always told me to clean my face every day.

  9. I love Mary Kay! I don’t wear a ton of make-up, and one tip I’ve learned is that keeping your eyebrows shaped well can do alot to brighten your face!

  10. I love Mary Kay cleaning and moisturizing products but I have not tried their make-up. Getting enough sleep!

  11. You best look is always healthy skin and hair, matched with a smile 🙂

  12. Favorite beauty tip: A dime sized circle of gold eyeshadow on the center of the eyelid right above the lashes makes eyes look sparkly and awake. This works especially well for gals with glasses.
My daughter is supposed to start wearing eye makeup to get her used to working around her eyes before getting corrective hard contact lenses. I’d love to pop these products in her Christmas stocking 🙂

  13. tiabennett says:

My best makeup advice is to always wash and moisturize your face every night, even when you don’t feel like it 🙂

  14. Mrsandrew says:

Drink lots of water. It clears the skins and improves circulation and general health.

  15. Greatest beauty tip – for oily skin like I have, use toner twice a day and a mud mask twice a week.

  16. The greatest beauty tip I have learned, Don’t over do it. Natural looking is best.

  17. My grandma (who is 82 and has beautiful skin) told me to wash my face, moisturize and wear sunscreen everyday!

  18. The best tip I’ve gotten is that less is more, and that not all trends work on everyone.

  19. Christy M says:

My mother in law is also a MK rep and she gives me lots of things to try. I love some of their moisturizers and the day/night serums.

  20. When approaching the teen years my Mom told me that to be pretty you need to believe you are pretty, and others will see it too, and also it is more important to be beautiful on the inside.

  21. The skin under your eyes is some of the thinnest on the body so it loses moisture quickly. If you are looking (or feeling) tired, apply an extra dose of moisturizer and it makes a huge difference!

  22. Wash morning and night, use toner and, moisturize.

Also, I find that if I use Mary Kay concealer on blemishes is often enough for light days, or when I’m running out and don’t want to go through the whole concealer, foundation, powder routine.

That’s a tip that I’d share for other users of Mary Kay. That little black tube of concealer (in your correct shade) is like a gift.

  23. MK foundation is really the best I’ve found! I provides the most even coverage and matches my skin tone so much better than anything I’ve ever tried. My favorite tip is to put mascara on both sides of my upper lashes to make them look fuller.

  24. This is a fun sweepstakes. My girls would love it if we won!

  25. Drink lots of water. I have dry skin. My daughters and I would have fun with a Mary Kay gift basket.

  26. Eat your veggies! I love Mary Kay products because I have sensitive skin prone to allergies. Mary Kay is one of the few product lines that don’t make my skin turn bright red.

  27. I would love to try MK foundation now that I’m over 40 and need it! I was just telling my girls I love when they don’t wear too much makeup because I can still see their freckles, but a little sparkle is fun!

  28. I tweezed my grandma’s eyebrows for her and she looked like she had a facelift so my tip is to keep your eyebrows in good shape!

  29. What I’ve learned is to moisturize. I love my MK products.

  30. I’ve always wanted to try Mary Kay, but never had the chance. Thanks for the opportunity!

  31. I love Mary Kay products. My best beauty tip is to get plenty of rest and exercise!

  32. Angela Maddox says:

My tip I learned is to use my fourth finger when applying anything to my face. You use less pressure and pull on the eyes less preventing more wrinkles.

  33. My best beauty tip has to be Mary Kay’s powder foundation. I’m a girl in a hurry when it comes to getting ready but at my age I found I really needed a bit of foundation to even my tone out. This is one I can find the time for!

  34. I’ve been using Made On hard lotion and it has been wonderful to help my skin in the 0% humidity where I live.

  35. “You’re never fully dressed without a smile!” Ha! Oh, and moisturize.

  36. My tip is to try out samples and then think about it before buying. Too many times I’ve tried a sample and thought I loved it only to decide hours later, in different light, that it just wasn’t me.

  37. When a mascara tube is done, save the wand! Just wipe the leftover goop off and use it as an eyebrow brush!

  38. The best beauty tip I’ve learned is to strive for a beautiful heart. You have to be beautiful on the inside, and that isn’t anything you can buy in a store. Although a Mary Kay gift basket wouldn’t hurt!

  39. I always wear MK as a teen because my mom’s best friend was a consultant. I help her with many parties. I have always loved their products.
Best beauty tip is “Jesus is the author of true beauty” I can only be truly beautiful because His light shines from within.

  40. My best beauty tip was from my grandma. Look yourself in the mirror, check everything once, then walk out the door and forget about what you look like. Instead, look at the other women you meet and compliment them on their appearance.

  41. I love Mary Kay products. I use the beige liquid foundation. To buy much more would be out of my price range, but they are good, quality products. I’d love to win the basket!

  42. Curling eyelashes instantly will highlight your eyes…best. tip but I rarely do it!

  43. I have never tried Mary Kay products but I would love the chance to try them someday! I can’t really think of any thrilling make-up tip that hasn’t already been mentioned! ~~Pam

  44. A smile is always a must!

  45. I love Mary Kay! I don’t have a MK lady, so I don’t get to order all the time. This would be SUCH a nice pick me up for someone to win! 🙂

I guess one beauty tip I’ve learned is to fill the lips with lip liner, and then add lipstick on top. Keeps it from wearing off… 🙂
