Sony Pocket Reader Winner

If you’ve been reading the comments on the Sony giveaway, you’ll understand why I had a terrible time picking a winner.  Usually I pick my winners randomly, but Sony asked that I pick a winner based on content– MUCH harder. There were so many interesting, worthwhile comments. I’ve decided to post the ten comments that were most meaningful to me, ending with the winning comment.

#10- Submitted by Amber

“Isn’t it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive-it’s such an interesting world.”

–From “Anne of Green Gables”

#9 -Submitted by Mary Pauline

“I am matter, and the pain of missing him is antimatter, and when you put the two together, kaboom, there’s nothing left of me to get out of bed and go clean up the bakery. I’ll never miss Ethan any less than I did on the day that he died. I know this, because I don’t miss my mother any less than the day she drove off the road twenty-three years ago. My grief is diminished, but it feels permanent, like a small scar. I have brown hair, brown eyes, wear size seven shoes. I miss my husband, miss my mother. Two chips out of my heart like birthmarks. Today I’m exhausted from carrying on as though this is all right.”

-from “Good Grief” by Lolly Winston

#8 — Submitted by Amanda

” …the choice you make, between hating and forgiving, can become the story of your life,”

-from “Shantaram” by Gregory David Roberts

#7 –Submitted by Jill F.

“Have Thy Tools Ready, God will Find Thy Work.”

–by Robert Browning

#6 –Submitted by Sandy Taggart

“Forgiveness is not a feeling, but an act of faith, a definite act of the will to forgive, in obedience to God’s command. The feeling comes later, the feeling of peace. When we offer to God our hurts and despair, God will pour his love and compassion into the wounds and His healing will come.”

– from “First We Have Coffee” by Margaret Jensen.

#5 –Submitted by Dustin

“There is nothing, no circumstance, no trouble, no testing that can ever touch me until first of all it has come past God and past Christ, right through to me. If it has come that far, it has come with a great purpose.”

— by Alan Redpath

#4 — Submitted by Taryn

“The life that I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt.”

–from “The Hungering Dark”

#3 – Submitted by Jessica Brammer

“To trust in spite of the look of being forgotten;to keep crying out into the vastness whence comes no voice, and where seems no hearing; to struggle after light, where the is no glimmer to guide; to see the machinery of the world grinding on as if self-moved, caring for no life, not shifting a hairsbreath for all the begging against it, and yet believe that God is awake and utterly loving; to desire nothing but what comes meant for us from his hand; to wait patiently, willing to die of hunger, fearing only lest faith should fail-such is the victory that overcomes the world, such is faith indeed.”

–from ‘The Lairds Inheritance’ by George MacDonald

#2 — Submitted by Mike

“None of us need one more person pointing out where we have failed or fallen short. Most of us are already well aware of the areas in which we are weak. What each of us does need is family, friends, employers, and brothers and sisters who support us, who have the patience to teach us, who believe in us, and who believe we’re trying to do the best we can, in spite of our weaknesses.”

—by Marvin J Ashton

“These children are dear to Me. Be a mother to them, and more than a mother. Watch over them tenderly, be just and kind. If thy heart is not large enough to embrace them, I will enlarge it after a pattern of My own. If these young children are docile and obedient, bless Me for it; if they are froward, call upon Me for help; if they weary thee, I will be thy consolation; if thou sink under thy burden, I will be thy Reward.”

— by Amy Carmichael quoted in her biography “A Chance to Die” by Elisabeth Elliot
