This morning my 14 year old son and I got up at 4:30 and hit the stores. We shopped Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Office Depot, Kings, the craft store, and the grocery store. We got done around 9 AM.

My son discovered an interesting way to ‘part the waters’ in a store full of people. He’d put a shopping basket on his head and start walking. People stared. And moved. They thought he was a bit looney. He’s not–he’s just a clown. I opted not to wear the basket. It was enough just to follow him. 🙂

It worked pretty well to have my son shop with me for the first 15 minutes in each store, then head for the checkout while I finished up with odds and ends I hadn’t found yet. I found about 80% of what I wanted, so I’d call that a success. One fun find was a new bedding set for my king sized bed that cost only $35– and that included a bedskirt, 4 pillowcases, sheets, and a comforter.

At home the kids and I did a craft– maybe I’ll blog about that tomorrow– and then I locked myself in my room to wrap. I got 2 dozen gifts wrapped before I gave up and sacked out on the couch for a nap. (That is, if you can call it a nap when it is in the living room with half a dozen people, several of whom call out “MOM!” every 4.5 minutes while several others loudly hiss ‘ssshhhh!!!!”).

Tonight we’re doing personal pan pizzas for dinner and then we’re planning to watch The Muppet’s Christmas. All in all, an excellent day!

  1. Sounds like your 14 year old has it right – better to look a little loony and part the waters than to BE loony in the shopping madness yesterday. Always enjoy reading your posts – you are for me a recent find via Shannon’s Rocks in my Dryer. Glad you got a nap – even with NO children I have adapated my napping skills to zonking out completely with a football game blaring and two little dogs jockeying for position on top of me! A gal’s gotta do what a gal’s gotta do! Congrats on the successful shopping trip – I watched all the shopping madness on tv news from my quiet home in the country.

  2. So glad you both came home in one piece. Finding 80% of what you were looking for is a huge accomplishment!

Sometimes it’s nice to snooze in a room full of people, it’s always interesting to drift in and out listening to the conversations.

I hope you and your family have a wonderful holiday season.

  3. adopt me? hahaha

i agree better your boy be a clown and be confident enough to not care what other people think (thats amazing right there) that actually you know be one of the crazyies

  4. Well, Mary, I have to hand it to you for 1. taking part in the Black Friday shopping spree 2. enjoying it and 3. being successful. I had never joined the ranks of the early-rising, sale-finding psychos (I mean that in the nicest way possible 😉 ) until yesterday and I don’t have the patience to ever do it again! The thing that amazed me the most is that our Target did not have even half of their registers open so the lines were UN! REAL! Ugh! I also saw two tents pitched at Best Buy Thanksgiving night around 7:00. Now, call ME crazy but there is nothing in Best Buy that is a good enough deal for me to sleep outside in a tent on a cement sidewalk in 20-degree weather. Next year, I’ll be enjoying the extra several hours of sleep and praying that all you early-rising, sale-finding psychos don’t permanently lose your sanity amongst the chaos. 🙂

    Happy Thanksgiving!

  5. Sounds like you did great! I didn’t brave Black Friday this year, but my 3 girls did. Elizabth is almost 17 and she took the list with her 2 sisters and off they went. They did well for their first time, and I got to stay home…pretty cool! Now to wrap:)

  6. Great description! A little guy with the shopping basket on his head serves dual purposes: part the waters AND conceivably elicit a reaction from some folks that serves to temporarily distract them from the oh so consuming materialistic endeavor at hand. A short, healthy disconnect!

The description of you napping attempt is comical (to one not trying to nap). I can imagine the “shhhhs” grasping at your attention more than the “MOMs!”

    Thanks for sharing!
