Bedbugs, Yo Gabba Gabba, and Backyardigans

I am woefully behind on my product reviews with the arrival of our two new kids. But I wanted to tell you what I thought of some kids DVD’s that were sent to me recently.

The first is a new series of shows called Bedbugs by Greenestuff Incorporated. I reviewed Volume One which featured The Lost Sock Adventure as well as two other shows. My younger kids were entertained by this and I thought it was fairly fun to watch as well.

The next video I watched was called Yo Gabba Gabba. It is produced by Nick Jr. The show I watched had a cameo of Elijah Woods dancing during one song. Other shows are also slated to feature some famous guest such as Biz Markie and Tony Hawk. The music is definitely the best part of this new series that made its debut last wee. But frankly, this DVD was so slow and silly that it drove me batty. Even my younger kids wandered off as I watched it. It moves to slowly and is too simplistic even for a two year old in my opinion. Sorry, Nick Jr., this one is definitely a thumbs down in my book.

The final DVD was my very favorite. My kids have always enjoyed Backyardigans (also by Nick Jr.)and this new hour-long movie called Super Secret Spy is really fun. It premieres on Nickelodeon on Monday, September 17th, and in my opinion is very worth watching. Even my 9 year old boys enjoyed this one. We would definitely watch this one again!

So that’s my take on some of the new stuff out there for little kids lately. Please keep your ideas coming!

  1. Glad that I am not the only parent who quickly flips before Yo Gabba Gabba comes on, and quickly flips to the Backyardigans!

Not that we watch a lot of TV of course, but I like to make it stuff we all like!

  2. I am a huge, huge fan of The Backyardigans – thanks for the tip on the movie coming out – I’ll be setting the TIVO!

  3. CanadianCarrie says:

We are huge fans of the Backyardigans! LOVELOVELOVE them, I’m glad you enjoy them too!!
BTW your new girls, well, all of your kids for that matter, are gorgeous!

  4. Yo Gabba Gabba reminds me of a very very BAD teletubbies…. I seriously wonder what the producers/writers were thinking creating such a horrible show. It actually creaps me out. I shudder at the thought of it being on tomorrow morning and the kids possibly asking to watch it.

I am in LOVE with Backyardigans… I saw the commercial for that episode coming up… I can’t hardly wait, I am probably more excited than my kids are… I love childrens shows that have a plot that momma can actually enjoy. Backyardigans is a hit with most parents I think.

  5. Sorry have to disagree with you on Yo Gabba Gabba. It’s hip and new and my daughter loves it… maybe you’re a bit 2 square….. 😉

  6. I’m bummed you didn’t enjoy Yo Gabba Gabba, I watched the producer Christian Jacobs, get married years ago too his sweet wife, and live humble as they had three children about my kids age, and try to pursue his dreams of doing something for kids. All of us from Huntington Beach California are so proud of him! And he involves all the kids from the area to be involved.
My family and I will always be HUGE fans of Yo Gabba Gabba!

  7. Backyardigans is okay… but Yo Gabba Gabba is the best! I’ve heard some people compare it to Sesame Street and I’d have to agree. Sesame St. was hip for its time, I think this show does the same thing- including bringing on special guests like Sesame St did. The themes are good and the songs are catchy and fun enough for me to sing with the kids. I grow weary of these shows that either put me to sleep or I get irritated listening to. Yo Gabba Gabba has enough fun things that I as a parent can enjoy with the kids. [As I hum “Clean it up, Clean it up, Pick up the Trash now”]

I understand how this show gets mixed reviews, because some parents have a frame of mind of what ‘kid stuff’ has to be like. Yo Gabba Gabba is not the norm- and I’m glad for it. I sure hope this show lasts numerous seasons.
