You Put A Song In My Heart

So here’s the deal, peeps. Crazy wild busy weekend coming up for me here. Lots of fun stuff planned. A wedding being the highlight. And a gazillion smaller wedding-related events surrounding the wedding. Basically my weekend is gone. In the nicest possible way.

So. I’m taking a little break here. But I don’t want you to forget about me while I’m off playing, so I have an idea for weekend entertainment.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned this to you, but I have this crazy/wierd thing with songs. My husband accuses me of being part canary. If it rains, I sing, ‘Ain’t Gonna Rain no More, no More..” If a kid is grumpy, depending on my mood I might burst into ‘Count Your Blessings’ — OR “Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen” (no, not the nice Louis Armstrong version, the really dumb one from the old show HeeHaw– anybody remember that one?? I find it incredibly scary that I remember that show. Warped, I am.)

It’s so bad my one year old will sometimes put her little index finger on my mouth and say, ‘shhhh.’ Hubby swears I have a song for every occasion. But I want MORE. Here’s the deal: I’m hoping you can introduce me to some songs I don’t know.

And it’s a contest. For the purposes of this contest, let’s stay roughly in three categories: folk songs, kids songs, and Sunday-School songs. Like I said, a song gets into my head and I sing it to my kids! You can only get away with something like “Rock Me Like A Hurricane” for a little while, then pretty soon you realize they’re accidentally getting their sex-ed from some stupid song mom is belting out and shouldn’t be. I’ve been there and I just don’t want to go there again…

So, back to the game. Give me some of your favorite fun-for-kids songs. Only one song per comment. Yes, I’m dreaming of lots of comments!! And I’m giving out points!

—One point if you are first to mention a song
—One more point if I don’t know it.
—And two MORE points if you supply me with lyrics or a weblink to lyrics, or an mp3 or something cool like that.

Five points if you call me on the phone and hum me a few bars (Kidding about that last one, just kidding. Hubby would skin me if I gave out our phone number!)

So, you can get a total of 4 points for each song. It’s OK to supply the lyrics to someone else’s song if they didn’t do it in their comment about that song. The person who ends up with the most points gets a spot on my sidebar for a week. (maybe I should change my Golden Keyboard Award to the Golden Songbird Award for this week…hehe)

So, does it sound like fun? I’m hoping I’m not the only song-lover in the bunch… and hoping when I get back here my blog won’t be just dead from loneliness and neglect. So go think of some songs. Come back and tel me about ’em, OK?

And have a great weekend without me…. I’ll tell ya all about the wedding when I come up for air! I’m off to buy my son dress shoes and find a camisole to go under my (shockingly!) low-cut blouse and a gazillion other things….

Oh, and here’s ONE link to help ya out!

  1. Oh, YES! You KNOW I'm going to like this challenge! I sing to my boys all the time, so I've found some great songs and places on the web to learn them. Here's my first offering: Alphabet Song, http://www.niehs.nih.gov/kids/lyrics/alphlove.htm

  2. I've also heard Seamus Kennedy perform Dr. Seuss' "Waltzing with Bears", bought the tape (back when…), and now sing the song to my boys. They LOVE it.

    Lyrics: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=126615

Tune: can't find a midi on it.
Would have to call and sing it for you. 😉

Oooh! Here is someone elses' version of it: http://www.luicollins.com/album_notes/sounds/bear

    Yeah!

  3. Then I hate to admit it, but one of the boys' favorite Christmas (and the rest of the year) songs is Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer.

    Words and music at: http://www.links2love.com/christmas_songs_grandma

  4. Just sang this one to my husband yesterday, when we accidentally locked him out and then took way too long getting to the door while he was knocking and yelling. (In a nice way of course.)

    Be Patient
    Be patient
Don't be in such a hurry.
    When you are
    impatient
    you only start to worry
    REMEMBER!
REMEMBER!(This part has to be sung loud and obnoxiously.)
    God is patient too.
Aaaaaand think of all the times
    when others
    have to wait for you.

(I had actaully forgotten about that song from years ago, and never taught it to my kids until yesterday.)

  5. I suppose "Baby's Got Back" probably wouldn't be one you're looking for, huh? Yeah, right. Okay, okay….let me think….

One I sing around the house fairly regularly is "Don't Wanna Miss a Thing", by Aerosmith. It's kinda romantic, but it certainly has some very sweet mom sentiment going for it. Here are the lyrics:

I could stay awake just to hear you breathing
Watch you smile while you are sleeping
While you're far away and dreaming
I could spend my life in this sweet surrender
I could stay lost in this moment forever
Every moment spent with you is a moment I treasure

    Don't wanna close my eyes
    I don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
    I'd still miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing

    Laying close to you
    Feeling your heart beating
And I'm wondering what you're dreaming
Wondering if it's me you're seeing
    Then I kiss your eyes
    And thank God we're together
I just want to stay with you in this moment forever
    Forever and ever

I don't wanna close my eyes
    I don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
    I'd still miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing

I don't wanna miss one smile
I don't wanna miss one kiss
And I just wanna be with you
Right here with you just like this
I just wanna hold you close
I feel your heart so close to mine
And just stay here in this moment for all the rest of time
    Yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah) yeah

    Don't wanna close my eyes
    I don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
    I'd still miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing

I don't wanna close my eyes
    I don't wanna fall asleep
    'Cause I'd miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing
'Cause even when I dream of you
The sweetest dream would never do
But I'd still miss you baby
    And I don't wanna miss a thing

I don't wanna close my eyes
I don't wanna fall asleep, yeah
    And I don't wanna miss a thing

  6. And how about "Every Kind of People", by Robert Palmer?

Said the fight to make ends meet
Keeps a man upon his feet
    Holding down his job
Trying to show he can’t be bought

Ooh it takes every kinda people
To make what life’s about, yeah
    Every kinda people
To make the world go ‘round

    Someone’s looking for a lead
In his duty to a King or to a creed
Protecting what he feels is right
Fights against wrong with his life

    There’s no profit in deceit
    Honest men know that
    Revenge does not taste sweet
    Whether yellow, black or white
Each and every man’s the same inside

    It takes every kinda people
To make what life’s about, yeah
    It takes every kinda people
To make the world go ‘round
    Doo doo doo……

You know that love’s the only goal
That could bring a peace to any soul
Hey and every man’s the same
He wants the sunshine in his name

    It takes every kinda people
To make what life’s about, yeah
    It takes every kinda people
To make the world go ‘round
    mmmm, every kinda people
    To make what life’s about

  7. How about Elvis Costello's "When That I Was And A Little Tiny Boy"?

    It goes like this…

When that I was and a little tiny boy
    With a Hey-ho
    The wind and the rain
A foolish thing was but a toy
    For the rain it raineth
    Every day
But when I came to man's estate
    With a Hey-ho
    The wind and the rain
'Gainst knaves and thieves men shut their gate
    For the rain it raineth
    Every day

But when I came alas to wife
    With a Hey-ho
    The wind and the rain
By swaggering I could never fright
    For the rain it raineth
    Every day

But when I came unto my bed
    With a Hey-ho
    The wind and the rain
With tosspots still a drunken head
    For the rain it raineth
    Every day

A great while ago the world began
    With a Hey-ho
    The wind and the rain
But that's all one our play is done
And we'll strive to please you
    Every day

  8. I often use this one for a setback in the routine–
Artist: Israel Kamakawiwo Ole' who was a beloved son of Hawaii.
Sadly, Brudder Iz passed away in 1997.

    Song: Starting All Over Again

Starting all over again is going to be rough
For us, we're going to make it
Starting all over as friends is going be tough
On us, we gotta face it

    We lost what we had
That would hurt us so bad
Set us back a thousand years
But we going to make it up
Though I know it's going to be tough
To erase the hurt and fears

Starting all over again is going to be hard
But I pray to the Lord to help us make it
Starting all over again is going to slow
But we both know, we gonna make it

We gotta take life as it comes
Never fuss about it, what's right or wrong
It's an uphill climb, to the finish line
We gonna try, we gonna try, just one more time

We gotta take life as it comes
Don't make any fuss about it, what's right or wrong
We gonna make it up, though I know it's gonna be rough
To erase the hurt and fears

Starting all over again is going to be rough
For us, we're going to make it
Starting all over as friends is going be tough
On us, we gotta face it

  9. Ok, I don't sing the entire song, but when we are out for a walk or crossing the street, or whatever, I always sing this part of the Beatles "I want to hold your hand"

I never knew the lyrics to the whole song, and now that I have read them, I would so not sing them to my kids. But I like this part anyway.

    I'll tell you something
    I think you'll understand
    When I say that something
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
I want to hold your hand
    http://www.stevesbeatles.com/songs/i_want_to_hold

This is the link to the lyrics and stuff. I have no working speakers right now, so I can't find a link with the music…

  10. and Jeana…I sing that song to my kids (and sometimes hubby) all the time. They absolutely hate it!!! I grew up with that one too.

  11. Okay, I thought of one that I sang to my son the other day, when he was complaining about eating his food! But the entire lyrics don't fit, just the chorus: "Take it like a man! Steady and strong, not a lotta fuss and carryin' on!" Okay, only part of the chorus fits, but it made him laugh and eat his food! It makes my husband clam up too when he moans about changing diapers! Hey, I should make my own lyrics for that one (men changing diapers)! Any points? " Change it like a man! Steady and strong. Not a lotta fuss and carryin' on…. If you want this woman's heart, change it like a man!" Great idea here!

  12. Well first of all I have to mention that I, too, sing the Hee Haw song. I believe you are referring to Gloom! Despair! And A-Go-Nee on me! Yes??

But the song I would like to add is the chorus which goes thusly:

You can't always get what you wa-ant!
You can't always get what you wa-ant!
You can't always get what you wa-ant.
    And if you try sometimes…
You get sent to bed! Oh yea-ah!

So I changed the last line… so what! 😉 It's very educational for my boys.

  13. One more on the sweeter side…

My boys' favorite for me to sing to them is SnugglePuppy by Sandra Boynton. It's off the Philadelphia Chickens album which is Fan-double-Tastic. (and on itunes, by the way) I normally don't go for things done by celebs – but who knew Eric Stoltz could croon so sweetly… The song goes:

Well I have a thing to tell you
    And it won't take long
The way I feel about you
Is a kind of a song
    It starts with an Oooo
    And ends with a kiss
And all along the middle it goes something like this, it goes

    Oooo SnugglePuppy of mine
The way I feel about you is especially fine
    I love what you are
    I love what you do
    Fuzzy little Snuggle Puppy
    I love you
    It goes
    Ooooo Snuggly Puppy of mine
Everything about you is especially fine
    I love what you are
    I love what you do
    Oooo I love you. [kiss]

  14. OH MY GOSH JEANA!! Wasn't that Music Machine! I have NEVER heard anyone else quote lyrics from that record!!!

On to the contest…I never win them…but I'll try. And since I can't even remember the title of this song, I will never win….

    "So I never will forget
    I sing a little song
And that song always reminds me that
    God loves me.
    And it's always better yet
    When someone sings along
So two of us can know
    About God's love."

That's all I know, but it always cheers me up. And I can call you up and sing it if you like for bonus points!! OR WHEN YOU GET TO IDAHO!!!!!!

  15. Have to agree with blestwithsons – Philadelphia Chicken CD is great my kids LOVE it!!! It has lots of "addicting" songs on it.

  16. My sister just gave me this DVD: Super Strong God here's a website http://www2.hillsong.com/kids/
Here's a link to the lyrics to one of my favorite songs http://www.stlyrics.com/songs/a/
    australiahillsongs8787/oneway816044.html
here's an mp3 sample. although it wouldn't play for me but i think that's because we use linux and not the usual stuff. http://www.audiblefaith.com/pages/sg206146
I don't care about the points (much) I just hope you enjoy the song. Or perhaps you already know it. Hillsong music is pretty popular.

  17. Here is a great one for a walk!

Look both ways, By the Wiggles. James loves it.
    http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000051Y5J/ref=a

  18. My kids just LOVE it when I sing the "Good Morning" song (from "Singing in the Rain") to them in the mornings:
    http://www.stlyrics.com/lyrics/singinintherain/go

And then I sing the song from "Rawhide" when we're trying to get out the door:
    http://www.lyricsondemand.com/tvthemes/rawhidelyr

Then when I REALLY want to make the older ones roll their eyes, I sing Barney's "Clean Up" song to them…you know, "Clean up, clean up/everybody everywhere/clean up, clean up/everybody do your share." You can imagine how cool an 8-year-old boy thinks THAT song is.

  19. My kids love The David Crowder Band (just like their mom!). They willl always as for "Davie Cowder" Their favorite is Here is our King

    Here is our King
    Here is our Love
Here is our God whos come to bring us back to him
    He is the One
    He is Jesus

Doesnt really fit in any category, but is fun to watch them dance to! And there isnt anything cuter than watching 3 year olds sing it and point to the sky for Jesus

  20. This is the song that never ends.
It just goes on and on, my friend.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because…
This is the song that never ends.
It just goes on and on, my friend.
Some people started singing it, not knowing what it was
And they'll continue singing it forever just because…
    etc., ad nauseum

    Oops. No Midi.

  21. If all the raindrops…

    Lyrics and midi here. http://www.christysclipart.com/camp2.html#If%20al

  22. Be Kind to Your Web-Footed Friends
    Lyrics and midi http://www.christysclipart.com/camp.htm#Be%20Kind

  23. Jeana-I totally was going to post the patience song. I remember that one from some old Animals record we had when I was a kid. CRAZY!

  24. Every bad dream calls for this chorus from Veggie Tales
    God is Bigger song…

God is bigger than the boogie man.
    He's bigger than Godzilla,
    or the monsters on TV.
Oh, God is bigger than the boogie man.
And He's watching out for you and me.
He's watching out for you and me.

The whole song can be found at http://www.stlyrics.com/songs/v/veggietales4708/g

  25. Okay, this is outside the rules, but for the 80's and 90's people out there (kate) I HAVE to tell you this: remember that MC Hammer song, Can't Touch This? He kept saying "Stop! Hammer time." My friend would always say at bedtime "Stop! 'jama time." (pajamas) and when her little girl was potty training she would sing "Who let the poop out?" (Who Let the Dogs Out)

AND I think it's so funny that you mentioend Rock You Like a Hurricane. Did you read my story about playing that on a child's xylophone? And one Sunday Dawson sang two songs for his SS teacher: Nothin But the Blood of Jesus, and Superfreak. Little sponges, they are.

  26. Brittney loves to sing
"Brother for Sale" from Mary Kate and Ashley…and if Braden is being a stinker she will say remember mom…and start singing. http://marykate-and-ashley-olsen-lyrics.wonderlyr

  27. Brittney loves to sing
"Brother for Sale" from Mary Kate and Ashley…and if Braden is being a stinker she will say remember mom…and start singing. http://marykate-and-ashley-olsen-lyrics.wonderlyr

  28. Sorry, Mary, I'm wearing out my welcome, but this is too fun! Remember that other 80's song Safetydance? Scott always sings that (along with shaka Khan, but that's another story) and the first line says, "We can dance if we want to; we can leave your friends behind. 'Cause your friends don't dance and if they don't dance well they're…no friends of mine." My kids always sing that, but substitute for dance whatever we're doing at the moment; eat, clean, drive, skate…the list goes on and on.

  29. I just tried to comment and the internet ate it or something…
I remember singing this song to all my friends when they were feeling bad. I haven't sang it to my kids yet, but I am going to have to.

    You are my sunshine
    My only sunshine
    You make me happy
    When skies are grey
    You'll never know dear
    How much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

  30. Since I just saw *The King and I,* I propose "I Whistle a Happy Tune." It's about bravery and although it's from a musical, I personally think it qualifies as a kid song. ;^)
    http://www.hamienet.com/midi7612.html

  31. A great one when learning about Science (and God).

    Elements of life
    http://www.sararenner.com/music/music.htm#element

  32. "Warped, I am"

I read this and "heard" in in Yoda's voice. Too funny!!!

I sing "Stand up, stand up for Jesus" when I'm dressing my son and I need him to stand still. 🙂

These are the verses I know well enough to sing (and therefore type):

    Stand up, stand up for Jesus, ye soldiers of the cross;
Lift high His royal banner, it must not suffer loss.
From victory unto victory His army shall He lead,
Till every foe is vanquished, and Christ is Lord indeed.

    Stand up, stand up for Jesus, the trumpet call obey;
Forth to the mighty conflict, in this His glorious day.
    Ye that are His now serve Him against unnumbered foes;
Let courage rise with danger, and strength to strength oppose.

You can find a link to a midi file here: http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/s/t/standufj.htm

  33. Another one is "Jesus Loves Me" – an old Baptist staple that I grew up with. I've been singing Jonathan to sleep with that one since he was a few days old.

Jesus loves me! This I know,
For the Bible tells me so.
    Little ones to Him belong;
They are weak, but He is strong.

    Refrain

    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    Yes, Jesus loves me!
    The Bible tells me so.

Jesus loves me! He who died
    Heaven’s gate to open wide;
He will wash away my sin,
Let His little child come in.
    http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/j/e/jesuslme.htm

  34. Ok, last one. 🙂

"I Wish I Was A Honasorarius" (spelling?) This is a really old girl scout camp song that I learned from my mother who learned it from hers. It's funny.

I wish I was a Honasorarius, a Rippamatadame, ha ha ha ha.
But since I'm not and I never can hope to be a Honasorarius, a Rippamatadame,
    I'm a June Bug, I'm a Beetle,
I buzz and hit my head against a tree, ha ha ha ha.

I wish I was a Honasorarius, a Rippamatadame, ha ha ha ha.
But since I'm not and I never can hope to be a Honasorarius, a Rippamatadame,
    I'm a Boon Jug, I'm a Tee-bull,
I huzz and bit my tead against a bree, ha ha ha ha!

I tried to find a midi for this, but I think it's just too old.

  35. OK, I think Jeana will forever associate me with Bon Jovi (or 1990!).

I sing many songs to my kids. Too many to list. I can tell you they love when I sing from Phantom of the Opera and their newest one now is "Shoofly Pie and Apple Pan Dowdy"

Jeana, I am steering clear of the late 80's and 90's! LOL!!

  36. Peter Paul and Mary did a kids album called "Peter, Paul and Mommy" (ok, so I guess I'm dating myself with that reference), and one of my favorites from that album as "Boa Constrictor"

I'm being swallowed by a boa constrictor
I'm being swallowed by a boa constrictor
I'm being swallowed by a boa constrictor
And I don't like it very much!

Oh no, oh no, he swallowed my toe,
    he swallowed my toe
Oh gee, oh gee, he's up to my knee,
    he's up to my knee
Oh fiddle, oh fiddle, he's reached my middle,
    he's reached my middle
Oh heck, oh heck, he's up to my neck,
    he's up to my neck
Oh dread, oh dread, he swallowed my…. schlirppp!

  37. My nephew's favorite boy cout camp song – can't find the music though…

Scout Socks they never get dirty,
the longer you wear'em the stronger they get!
Sometimes I think of the laundry…
but something inside me says don't wash'em yet

  38. My absolute favorite children's lullaby of all time from "Dumbo" – "Baby Mine"

    Baby mine, don't you cry
    Baby mine, dry your eyes
Rest your head close to my heart
Never to part, baby of mine
    Little one when you play
Don't you mind what you say
Let those eyes sparkle and shine
Never a tear, baby of mine
If they knew sweet little you
They'd end up loving you too
All those same people who scold you
    What they'd give just for
    The right to hold you
From your head to your toes
    You're not much, goodness knows
But you're so precious to me
Cute as can be, baby of mine

  39. Down By the Bay

    Written By: Unknown
    Copyright Unknown

    Down by the bay
    Where the watermelons grow
    Back to my home
    I dare not go
    For if I do
    My mother will say
"Did you ever see a bear
    Combing his hair
    Down by the bay?"

    Down by the bay
    Where the watermelons grow
    Back to my home
    I dare not go
    For if I do
    My mother will say
"Did you ever see a bee
    With a sunburned knee
    Down by the bay?"

    Down by the bay
    Where the watermelons grow
    Back to my home
    I dare not go
    For if I do
    My mother will say
"Did you ever see a moose
    Kissing a goose
    Down by the bay?"

    Down by the bay
    Where the watermelons grow
    Back to my home
    I dare not go
    For if I do
    My mother will say
"Did you ever see a whale
    With a polka dot tail
    Down by the bay?"

This was a favourite when my kids were little. This is also a great lyrics site which I discovered when googling this song.

  40. Seasons of Love….yes some of the other songs from the musical are rather risque but not this one….listen to the words, it is a song of praise.
You know that love is a gift from up above…share the love, give love, spread the love, measure life in love!

all five of my kids will sing this and now they all know that there are five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes in a year. Nothing makes me smile wider than to see my baby boy sing it with a big smile on his face and his hands raised up in praise just like his mama does when she sings it. When we sing it in our house it is church!

My little boy and I also sing the club wedd target jungle to eachother all the time because it is our song and the song mommy auditioned for Manteca Idol 1 with…I was a finalist.

I love to be with you
I love you love love I do
I love to be with you
You know I love you I do
    I'm gonna make you mine
    mine all mine
you and me baby we'll shine!
I love to be with you
I love you love you love you love youlove you love you love you love you
    I DO!

  41. I always sang this to my grandkids just as my grandma sang it to me
    "You Are My Sunshine"

    You Are My Sunshine
    My only sunshine.
    You make me happy
    When skies are grey.
    You'll never know, dear,
    How much I love you.
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'm enjoying remembering all the songs!

  42. I just checked in to get some ideas for MY boys. GREAT comments on this post! I'm now going to check into Philadelphia Chicken. Can't believe I haven't heard of that one before. Sounds interesting! 😉

  43. We like to sing: If You're Happy and you Know it Clap Your Hands….

  44. What fun! I usually only remember snatches of songs, but I am singing them constantly, driving my boys nuts. A lot of kids' songs from my childhood tv shows (Electric Company and School House Rock, mostly – if someone says "Hey!" or "Wow!" I just HAVE to start singing "INTERJECTIONS!

  45. ack, my fingers went spastic and I somehow posted that, I wasn't finished.

Here's a song I learned from my kids' Sabbath School class:

One two three, Jesus loves me!
    One two, Jesus loves you!
Two three four, He loves you more
    Than you've ever been loved before;
    Five six seven, we're going to Heaven;
    Eight nine, simply divine;
Nine ten, let's sing it again!

  46. This is the first time I've visited your blog and what a fun first visit! 🙂

    How about:

    The Lord's Army

I may never march in the infintry
    Ride in the calvary
    Shoot the artilery
I may never fly oer the enemy
But I'm in the Lord's Army
    YES SIR!

    I'm in the Lord's Army
    YES SIR!
    I'm in the Lord's Army
    YES SIR!

I may never march in the infintry
    Ride in the Calvary
    Shoot the artilery
I may never fly o'er the enemy
But I'm in the Lord's Army!
    YES SIR!!

  47. And here's another one:

I want to be a worker for the Lord

I want to be a worker for the Lord,
I want to love and trust His holy word,
I want to sing and pray and be busy every day,
In the vineyard of the Lord.

I will work, I will pray, In the vineyard, in the vineyard of the Lord.
I will work, I will pray, I will labor every day in the vineyard on the Lord.

I want to be a worker strong and brave,
I want to trust in Jesus? power to save.
All who will truly come shall find a happy home.
In the kingdom of the Lord.

  48. Addition to Jeana's song, which I TOO sing all the stinking time…

When Herbert was much younger, he often got in trouble,
Forgetting that he was a snail, he did things on the double.
He'd crash through every spider web and with crickets he'd collide,
Till one day Herbert's father took his speeding son aside…

Now, insert Jeana's part of the song.

    Love the Music Machine!!!
